What the law provides
Under the No Surprises Act, health care providers must give people who are uninsured or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical items and services.
- You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services, including related costs such as evaluations and group or individual sessions.
- You can ask us for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service, or at any time during treatment.
- If you schedule a service at least three business days in advance, we will provide the estimate in writing within one business day of scheduling. For services scheduled at least ten business days in advance, we will provide it within three business days.
- Make sure to save a copy of your estimate.
If your bill is higher than the estimate
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill through the federal patient-provider dispute resolution process. You must start the dispute within 120 calendar days of the date on the bill.
Medicaid and insured clients
Most Open Arms clients are covered by Maryland or Virginia Medicaid, or a managed care organization, and pay nothing out of pocket for covered services. Good Faith Estimates apply to self-pay and uninsured clients. We verify your benefits before your first appointment either way.
