Signs You May Benefit from Therapy: 10 Signals Not to Ignore

Open Arms Clinical Team, LCSW, LCPC, PMHNPJuly 5, 20261 min read

You do not need a crisis or a diagnosis to see a therapist. Most of the people we meet come in because something is off, and they want it to stop growing.

10 signs that therapy could help

  1. Sleep changes that will not budge. Waking at 3 AM, or sleeping too much, for weeks.
  2. Small things feel enormous. A minor setback drops you for the whole day.
  3. You are more irritable than usual. Loved ones notice before you do.
  4. You feel numb. Even things you used to love do not land.
  5. Racing thoughts. You cannot slow down enough to concentrate, drive, or read.
  6. Physical symptoms with no medical explanation. Chest tightness, stomach issues, headaches.
  7. Using more, drinking more, scrolling more, working more. Coping tools that used to help start to hurt.
  8. A relationship keeps hitting the same wall. Same fight, same rupture, same rebuild.
  9. You are grieving. A loss, a divorce, a job, an identity. Grief benefits from a witness.
  10. Any thought of not wanting to be here. Reach out today. Call 988 for immediate support.

What a first therapy session looks like

Your therapist asks about your history, what brings you in, and what you want to be different. You set goals together and pick a cadence, usually weekly to start.

What if I do not know what I want to work on?

That is a completely normal reason to start. A good therapist can help you find the shape of what is bothering you.

How to choose a therapist

  • Fit matters most. If you do not click after the first two sessions, tell your therapist. A skilled therapist will not take it personally.
  • Check licensing. In Maryland, look for LCSW-C, LCPC, PsyD, PhD, or LMFT.
  • Ask about approach. CBT, DBT, EMDR, IFS, and psychodynamic all have research support; the right one depends on you.
